Flute Study with
Dr. Allison Asthana
My goal as a teacher is to leave you feeling self-reliant to continue learning and growing after your time studying with me. I place a special emphasis on student ownership of lesson topics and repertoire (we will work together to choose the music you play!), achieving freedom and experimentation in practice, and building confidence as performers and musical advocates. I am passionate about exposing musicians to a diverse range of composers, styles and genres.
I have a special interest in repertoire inspired by Hindustani music. My husband’s family is from India, and after hearing so much about it, I had the chance to visit in 2022. While there, I took bansuri lessons and subsequently created a practice eBook based on bansuri techniques (coming soon!).
I am currently accepting private students in the Houston area and online.
My studio is perfect for motivated students of all ages who are self-driven, curious, and willing to embrace experimentation and self-discovery. Advanced players will benefit from my familiarity with conservatory-level repertoire and performance experience. However, enthusiastic beginners are also accepted and are some of my favorite students to work with!
Flute lessons will consist of flute fundamentals (sound development, technique, vibrato, phrasing, articulation), access and guidance through supplementary resources, and assignment of repertoire that corresponds to your current skill level and goals. Students will also have access to performance opportunities and special group classes as a part of the studio.
Bansuri to Boehm
A FREE resource for all flutists!
In 2020, I was awarded the Presser Foundation Graduate Music Award based on a project to travel to India, learn about the bansuri (Indian flute), and create a resource for flutists to learn more about bansuri and how it is played and taught. The book is now available for download and includes play-along audio files for your practice! Visit the link below for your free copy!
